Al-Haj, Rahim (b. 1967, Baghdad). Iraqi composer, now resident in the USA, of chamber works that have been performed in Iraq and the USA; he is also active as an 'ud-player.
Mr. Al-Haj began autodidactic 'ud studies at age nine. He studied Arabic literature at Mustensaria University in Baghdad from 1984-90, as well as composition and 'ud with Munier Bashir and Salim Abdul Karim at the Conservatory of Music in Baghdad, and earned diplomas in all three subjects.
Among his honors are the Award for Composition from the Conservatory of Music (1988), the Award for Peace from Veterans for Peace in Florida (2001) and the Bravos Award for Excellence in Music from the Arts Alliance in New Mexico (2003).
He has given solo recitals in Bahrain, Egypt, France, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, as well as throughout the USA. He taught 'ud at the Institute for Arabic Music in Jordan from 1992-95.
He has lived in the USA since 2000.
