TT he Living Composers Project  

Avella, Vicente (b. November 27, 1970, Caracas). Venezuelan composer, now resident in the USA, of orchestral, chamber, choral, and vocal works that have been successfully performed in the Americas; he has also composed many film scores.

Mr. Avella studied piano performance with Lev Vlassenko and Enrica Cavallo-Gulli at Indiana University from 1991-95 (BMus). He then studied composition (on a full scholarship) with Ellsworth Milburn at Rice University in 1995-96 and composition with Sydney P. Hodkinson and Christopher Rouse at the Eastman School of Music from 1996-98 (MMus).

He has received numerous awards, including Honorable Mention at the International Composition Competition for Young Composers ALEA III (1997), the Bernard and Rose Sernoffsky Composition Prize from the Eastman School of Music (1998) and honors at the Waging Peace through Singing International Competition (2002).

In addition, he was a finalist for the Pete Carpenter Fellowship Award of BMI (1999), the Morton Gould Young Composer Award (2000) and the Turner Classic Movies Young Film Composers Competition (2001).

As a pianist, he has toured since 1994 and as a teacher, he has taught at the Newark School of the Arts since 1999 and the Suburban Community Music Center since 2001. He is also organist at the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Newark.
