Azevedo, Sérgio (b. 1968, Coimbra). Portuguese composer of mostly orchestral, chamber and piano works that have been performed throughout Europe and elsewhere; he is also active as a writer.

Mr. Azevedo studied composition with Fernando Lopes-Graça at the Academia de Amadores de Música from 1975-87. He then studied composition with Constança Capdeville at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa from 1987-90 and completed his doctoral studies in composition there with Christopher Bochmann in 2003. He has also attended courses with Gilbert Amy, Louis Andriessen, Mary Finsterer, Luca Francesconi, Philippe Manoury, Tristan Murail, Emmanuel Nunes, Jorge Peixinho, and Robert Sherlaw Johnson.

His honors include three Joly Braga-Santos prizes (chamber and orchestral categories, 1991; chamber, 1994), First Prize at the Juventude Musical Portuguesa (1992), the United Nations Prize (1994), two Fernando Lopes-Graça prizes (1997-98), and Second Prize in the Schiedmayer competition in Stuttgart (1998). In addition, his music has represented Portugal three times at the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers (1992, 1999-2000) and has been performed in Bulgaria, Canada, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and the UK.

As a writer, he has contributed articles to numerous publications in Portugal and abroad, including the ISCM New Music Magazine and The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and has written the books A Invenção dos Sons (1999, Caminho) and Manuscrito encontrado atrás de um Piano (2002). He also regularly writes notes for CDs, festivals and musical institutes.

Mr. Azevedo is also active in other positions. He collaborated with RDP in Lisbon from 1993-99 and has again since 2002. He has been a member of the Centro de Estudos Sociais e de Estética Musical (CESEM) since 1998 and of the Conselho das Artes do CNC since 2000. He founded the musical society SCORE in 2001, whose objective is to promote new Portuguese music in Europe.

He taught as a professor at the Academia de Música Luísa Todi, the Academia de Amadores de Música and the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa from 1987-95 and served as vice-president of the Academia de Amadores de Música in 1994-95 and from 1998-2000. He has taught as a professor at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa since 1993.
