Benzecry, Esteban (b. 1970, Lisbon). Portuguese-born Argentinean-French composer of
orchestral and chamber works that have been performed throughout the Americas
and in Europe.
Mr. Benzecry studied composition
privately with Haydée Gerardi and Sergio Hualpa and graduated from the fine
arts school Prilidiano Pueyrredon in Buenos Aires in 1992. From 1997-99, he
studied with Jacques Charpentier at the Paris Conservatoire, where he earned a
unanimous premier prix in 1999. In 2000-01, he studied composition with Paul
Méfano and electroacoustic music with Laurent Cuniot and Luis Naón at the same
school.
His honors include the distinction
as the Young Revelation of the Season by the Asociación de Criticos Musicales
de la Argentina (1992) and his Symphonie No. 1, ‘El
compendio de la vida’ was named the Best Argentinean Work in 1994. In 1995,
he was an invited composer at the Yehudi Menuhin Academy in Switzerland and in
1999, he earned a prize from the Fondation Tronchet et Delmas at the Académie
des Beaux-Arts at the Institut de France.
His works have been performed
throughout Argentina and France and in Colombia, Italy, Lithuania, Switzerland,
the UK, the USA, and Venezuela. He has received commissions from the
Carnegie-Mellon Contemporary Music Ensemble, the Fundación Banco Mayo
(Argentina), l’Orchestre de Cannes, l’Orchestre Colonne, l’Orchestre National
de France, the Orquesta Filarmónica de México, Radio France, and the Sinfónica Nacional
de Argentina, among other organizations.
He has lived in France since 1997.
