Clements, Dominy (b. October 18, 1964,
Newport, Wales). British-born Dutch composer of primarily orchestral, chamber
and vocal works that have been successfully performed throughout Europe; he is
also active as a flautist.
Mr. Clements graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1987, where he studied composition with Christopher Brown, Edward Gregson and Roger Steptoe. He also attended masterclasses with Hans Werner Henze and Krzysztof Penderecki. In 1987, he moved to The Netherlands, where he studied with Louis Andriessen and Gilius van Bergeijk and attended classes with Frederic Rzewski and Walter Zimmermann until 1989 at the Royal Conservatory in Den Haag.
He has won the Arts for the
Earth Festival/Rainforest (1990, for Murder
of Crows), the Piano Circus (1992, for Two
Lagrangian Functions) and the Icebreaker (1996, for A Little Dutch Snuff) composition competitions and was a finalist
in the Edvard Grieg Memorial Competition (1997-98, for Concerto in Esse).
In the 1980s, he performed
as a flautist in various ensembles and orchestras, including the Manson
Ensemble and his own ensemble, Rime. He is now flautist with the Duo Hofinger,
the world music trio Lautareasca, the Salonorkest Sofa, and the trio 3-Orm and
plays sub-contrabass flute with the Netherlands Flute Orchestra.
He now works at the Royal Conservatory in Den Haag as coordinator of the composition department, manager of the Podium-bureau (the internal and external concert circuit for students) and compiler and editor of the bimonthly Maandagenda (event calendar).
