Cretu, Catalin (b. September 8, 1971, Petrosani). Romanian composer of mostly
orchestral, chamber, choral, and piano works that have been performed in
Europe; he is also active as a writer.
Mr. Cretu studied at a music school
in Petrosani from 1977-85 and studied electromechanics at the Technical
University of Petrosani from 1990-95. From 1993-95, he studied musical pedagogy
at the Western University of Timisoara and from 1995-98, studied pedagogy at
the National University of Music in Bucharest. From 1996-2001, he studied
composition with Dan Dediu and Adrian
Iorgulescu at the same school and in 2001-02, he studied with Peter Michael
Hamel at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, on an Erasmus
Stipendiat. He had further studies at Ceský Krumlov in 2000, Bayreuth in 2001
and Darmstadt in 2002.
Among his honors are Special Prize
at the National Choral Composition Competition in Bucharest (1998) and Third
Prize in the Chamber Music Competition in Bucharest (1999). His music has been
heard in many cities in Germany and Romania.
In 1998, he co-founded the music
magazine Opus and has since been its
editor. Since 2002, he has also been music secretary at the National University
of Music in Bucharest.
