Dejonghe, Koen
(b. June 27, 1957, Kuurne). Belgian composer of primarily chamber, vocal and
piano works that have been performed throughout Europe; he is also active as a
pianist.
Mr. Dejonghe studied at the
Lemmensinstituut in Leuven, where he graduated in 1982 with a combined diploma
in music education and piano, which he studied with Levente Kende. He then
studied composition with Willem Kersters at the Koninklijk Vlaams
Muziekconservatorium in Antwerp, where he earned first prizes in fugue in 1990
and composition in 1994.
He has earned numerous honors,
including First Prize in the chamber music competition of the
Muizelhuisconcerten (1990, for Vier
stukken) and the Provinciale Prijs from the province of West Flanders
(1993, for Gezellesuite; 1996, for Sintra). He has also received the Jef
Van Hoof-Prijs (1998, for String Quartet
No. 2), and the Arrangement Award
in the Song Expo competition (2001, for Jace
and Concerto).
As a pianist, he has made numerous recordings for VRT and has often served as an accompanist to leading soloists.
Since 1981, he has taught chamber
music, composition and harmony at the Muziekacademie in Sint-Niklaas and
chamber music at the Muziekacademie in Antwerp. Since 1986, he has lectured on improvisation
and practical harmony at the Koninklijk Vlaams Muziekconservatorium in Antwerp.
