THE LIVING COMPOSERS PROJECT  

Muhiddin Dürrüoğlu-Demiriz

(b. 9 August 1969, Gerede).

Turkish composer, now resident in Belgium, of orchestral, chamber and piano works that have been performed in Europe and North America; he is also active as a pianist.

Mr. Dürrüoğlu-Demiriz studied composition and harmony privately with Kemal İlerici from 1979–82 and studied piano with İlhan Baran, Kâmuran Gündemir and Ersin Onay at the Hacettepe Üniversitesi Ankara Devlet Konservatuvarı – State Conservatory of Hacettepe University in Ankara from 1980–87. He then studied piano with Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden and composition with Jacqueline Fontyn at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels from 1987–89. He studied at the Chapelle musicale Reine Élisabeth in Waterloo from 1989–92 and studied composition with Don Freund and piano with Edward Auer at Indiana University in Bloomington in 1994, where he earned his DMus.

Among his honours as a pianist are First Prize in the competition Philippart in Belgium (1992), the Fulbright Scholarship (1992), the Prix de la Fondation belge de la vocation (1995), and the J. W. Pelemansprijs (1997). Among his honours as a composer are the Prix Arthur De Greef from the Académie royale des sciences, des lettres et des beaux-arts de Belgique in Brussels (1993), the prize for Coupe de la Création Musicale of the Académie Internationale de Lutèce in Paris (1993), an encouragement prize from the Muizelhuisconcerten (1996), the SABAM-Prijs (1996), the Prijs van de Stad Harelbeke (2000), the Prix de Composition in the competition for 20th-century music for piano in Orléans (2000), and the Prix Irène Fuerison from the Académie royale des sciences, des lettres et des beaux-arts de Belgique in Brussels (2001).

As a pianist, he has given solo recitals since age 12 and often plays chamber music and as a soloist with orchestra. He has performed in Argentina, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, the UK, and the USA.

He has taught chamber music at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels since 1994.

He has lived in Belgium since 1987.
