T he Living Composers Project  

Elia, Marios Joannou (b. 1978, Paphos). Cypriot composer, now resident in Austria and Germany, of mostly stage, chamber, choral, vocal, piano, electroacoustic, and multimedia works that have been performed in Europe.

Mr. Elia had private studies in composition, guitar and music theory in London from 1996-98 and received diplomas in guitar and music theory from the Associate Board of the Royal Schools of Music in London. He studied composition with Boguslaw Schaeffer at the Salzburg Mozarteum in 1999-2000, where he has also studied composition with Adriana Hölszky since 2000, guitar with Matthias Seidel and Marco Diaz Tamayo since 2001 and pedagogy with Wolfgang Roscher since 2002 and where he has earned BMus degrees in composition, guitar and pedagogy. In addition, he attended the composition masterclass of Klaus Huber at the Musik-Akademie Basel in 2003-04.

Among his honors are the Annerkennungspreis in the competition of the Salzburger und Pinzgauer Blasmusikverband (1999-2000, for Spring of the Poor) and two awards in the Paolo Barsacchi guitar competition (Diploma di Merito, 2000, for Suite No. 1; Third Prize, 2002, for Ontologie Kubik I-II). He was the highest-scoring student at the Salzburg Mozarteum (2001-02) and has also earned the Diploma di Merito in the Città di Barletta competition (2002, for Eco I-III) and Third Prize in the Città di Pavia competition (2002, for Im Spiegel). Most recently, he received a commission from the Hinrichsen Foundation (2003), First Prize in a competition in Volos, Greece (2004), the Raiffeisen Klassik Preis (2004) and First Prize in the Witold Lutoslawski competition in Warsaw (2004). In addition, he has received scholarships from organizations in Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, Germany, Liechtenstein, Poland, Switzerland, and the UK. His music has been performed in Austria, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Liechtenstein, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland, and the UK.

Mr. Elia is also active in other positions. He has written three volumes of poetry, Koita Ligo Apexo Lupimeni Kardia, Lampeio MaisSad Heart, May Is Shining (1998-2004), DIE LETZTE KERZE, BRENNT! (2002-04) and ProCheirosThoughts of the Day, Night and In-Between (2003–), all unpublished.

He has taught as an assistant to Adriana Hölszky at the Salzburg Mozarteum since 2003.
