T he Living Composers Project  

Furgeri, Biancamaria (b. October 6, 1935, Rovigo). Italian composer of mostly orchestral, chamber, choral, and vocal works that have been performed throughout Europe and elsewhere.

Ms. Furgeri studied at the Conservatorio di Padova and privately in Venice and Milan. Her teachers included Giuseppe Piccioli (piano), Wolfgango Dalla Vecchia (organ, composition), Bruno Coltro (harmony, counterpoint, fugue), and Giorgio Federico Ghedini and Bruno Bettinelli (composition).

Among her many honors are Third Prize in an organ competition in Magadino (1964, for Sonata), First Prize in the National Sacred Music competition in Varese (1973, for Messa) and First Prize in the GEDOK competition in Mannheim (1985, for Tre Episodi). In addition, she received First Prize in the International Competition for Women Composers in Zürich (1987, for Levia). She has received acknowledgments in the National Piano competition in Treviso (1965) and the Contemporary Music Review in Naples (1985), as well as five mentions in the Guido d'Arezzo competition in Arezzo (1974–75, 1984–85, 1992) and two in the Henryk Wieniawski competition in Poznań (honorable mention, 1985; third of ten finalists, 1990). Her works have been performed in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Serbia and Montenegro, Spain, and Switzerland.

Ms. Furgeri taught music theory and vocal and instrumental practice for children in Ferrara and harmony in Padua in the 1960s and has taught as a professor of counterpoint and harmony at the Conservatorio G.B. Martini in Bologna since 1969. She formerly served as headmaster of the Conservatorio F. Venezze in Rovigo.
