Gilbert, Nicolas (b. 1979, Montréal, Québec). Canadian composer of mostly chamber works that have been performed in Asia, Europe and North America.
Mr. Gilbert studied analysis with Serge Provost and composition with Michel Gonneville at the Conservatoire de Musique et d'Art Dramatique de Montréal from 1998-2003, where he earned the Prix avec Grande Distinction in 2003. He has studied composition with John Rea at McGill University in Montréal since 2003. He has also studied Mandarin Chinese at Nankai University in Tianjin and Russian at the State University of St. Petersburg.
Among his honors are two prizes in the SOCAN competition for young composers (Third Sir Ernest MacMillan Prize, 2003, for Tchal-Kouyrouk et la septième face du cube: musique sérielle naïve; Third Godfrey Ridout Prize, 2003, for Ce que vit Kenjeke depuis la colline de Khabarovsk). In addition, his Tchal-Kouyrouk et la septième face du cube: musique sérielle naïve was a finalist in the Lepo Sumera competition in Tallinn (2003) and he was also selected to participate in the 21st Century Young Composers Project of the International Contemporary Ensemble in Chicago (2003) and the Generation 2004 project of Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal (2004). He receives regular grants from various arts councils in Canada and research grants from the Fonds Québécois de Recherche sur la Société et la Culture. His music has been performed in Canada, China, Estonia, France, Ireland, Italy, Kosova, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, and the USA.
Mr. Gilbert is also active in other positions. He has served as president of the Société Codes d'accès, a non-profit organization that promotes contemporary music, since 2002 and as composer-in-residence to the Chapelle Historique du Bon-Pasteur in Montréal since 2003.
Edition HH is the primary publisher of his music, but Éditions BIM and Éditions Jobert publish some of his earlier works.
