Goethals, Lucien (b. June 26, 1931, Ghent – d. December 12, 2006, Ghent). Esteemed Belgian composer of mostly orchestral, chamber, vocal, piano, organ, and electroacoustic works that have been performed throughout the world.
Mr. Goethals initially studied in Buenos Aires, where he began studies in music theory and piano with Ernestina Carlota Faedo at the Conservatório Dima at age nine and began composing at age thirteen. He then studied at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent from 1947-57, where he earned diplomas in composition, counterpoint, fugue, harmony, music history, organ, and piano. After he finished his studies in Ghent, he studied composition and orchestration privately with Norbert Rosseau from 1958-60 and new composition techniques with Gottfried Michael Koenig at the Stichting Gaudeamus in 1961. He later attended courses in computer composition with Gottfried Michael Koenig at the Institute of Sonology of the University of Utrecht in 1968.
Among his honors are the E. Mathieu-Prijs (1956), the Provinciale Prijs from the province of East Flanders (1960), Fifth Prize in the Concours International de Musique Électroacoustique de Bourges (1973, for Contrapuntos), the Koopal-Prijs for chamber music (1976), and the Driejaarlijkse Cultuurprijs from the city of Ghent (1981). He has also received the SABAM Prize (1985), the titles of Man of the Year (1990) and Professional of the Year in Music (1991) from the American Biographical Institute and the International Order of Merit from the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge (1991). Most recently, he received the Visser-Neerlandia Prize in Den Haag (1999).
Numerous organizations, including the Association Contemporaine des Interprètes et Compositeurs, the Festival van Vlaanderen, the government of France, IMEB, RTBF, STIMUS, and VRT, have commissioned works from him. In addition, numerous ensembles have commissioned and performed his music, including APSARA, Duo Contemporain, Ensemble 2e2m, Fusion Moderne, the Galliard Ensemble, Musique Nouvelle, Het Nederlands Klarinetkwartet, the Spectra Ensemble, and Het Trio.
He co-founded with Louis De Meester the Institute of Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music (IPEM) at the University of Ghent in 1962 and served as its artistic director from 1970-87. He taught as Docent van Muziekanalyse at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent from 1970-92.
