T he Living Composers Project  

Good, Scott (b. 1972, Toronto). Canadian composer of mostly orchestral, chamber and vocal works that have been successfully performed in North America; he is also active as a bass trombonist.

Mr. Good studied at the Eastman School of Music (BMus in composition and performance, 1995) and the University of Toronto (MMus in composition, 1998; he is currently working on a DMus).

He has received many awards for his music, including the Howard Hanson Prize (1995) and First Prize at the Winnipeg New Music Festival Composers Competition (1996); more recently, he has received the John Weinzweig Prize (1999) and two Third prizes in the SOCAN Competition for Young Composers (2000-01).

Mr. Good is the artistic director and conductor of Slide Rule, a 16-member trombone ensemble. He is also a former member of the Morpheus Contemporary Music Ensemble (1992-95), a founding member of the Trillium Brass Quintet (1996) and a co-founder of the earshot music series (2000; the other co-founders are Keith Denning and Christopher Matey). He has also performed with the free improvisational ensembles GUH (1997-2000) and Woodchoppers Association (1999-2000).

He has served as a trombonist in many orchestras, including the Heidelberg Festival Orchestra, the Scotia Festival Symphony Orchestra, the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, the Composers Orchestra, Orchestra London, the Esprit Orchestra, and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Since 1991, he has taught trombone privately, and since 1997 (as an assistant), he has taught Brass Chamber Music at the University of Toronto. He is currently working on a work for baroque ensemble and a work for the University of Toronto's new music ensemble.
