T he Living Composers Project  

Ho, Vincent Chee-Yung (b. 1975, Ottawa, Ontario). Canadian composer, now resident in both Canada and the USA, of mostly orchestral, chamber and piano works that have been performed in North America and elsewhere.

Mr. Ho began composing at age fourteen. After he received his ARCT in piano performance in 1993, he studied composition with Allan Gordon Bell, David Eagle and William Jordan at the University of Calgary from 1994-98, where he earned his BMus. He then studied with Walter Buczynski and Christos Hatzis at the University of Toronto in 1998, where he earned his MMus. He has studied composition with Stephen Hartke at the University of Southern California since 1998, where he is working on his DMA. He also attended the Schola Cantorum Summer Composition Program in Paris in 1997, where he encountered Narcis Bonet, David Diamond and Philip Lasser.

Among his honors are four prizes in the SOCAN competition for young composers (Second Prize in the Chamber Music category, 1999, for String Quartet No. 1; Third Prize in the Orchestral category, 2000, for Nighthawks; Second Prize in the Orchestral category, 2004, for Dragon Realms; Second Prize in the Solo/Duet category, 2004, for Stigmata). He has also received the Audience Prize in the Toronto New Music Festival (1999, for Three Scenes of Childhood) and prizes from the Strings of the Future and the PEEL Music festivals (both 1999) and participated in the Long-Term Residency Program at the Banff Centre for the Arts (2000-01). In addition, he has received the Sadye J. Moss Composition Prize from the University of Southern California (2004, for Dragon Realms), First Prize in the Earplay Donald Aird Memorial competition (2004, for Stigmata) and an ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Award (2004, for Dragon Realms). His works have been performed in Canada, China, France, Italy, and the USA.
