THE LIVING COMPOSERS PROJECT  

Artashes Hovhannisyan

(b. 9 October 1974, Yerevan).

Armenian composer, now resident in Canada, of orchestral, chamber and piano works that have been performed in Europe.

Mr. Hovhannisyan studied violin in Yerevan from 1982–89 and earned a certificate of excellence. He then studied composition with Edvard Mirzoyan at the Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan from 1991–98. He later had postgraduate studies in composition with Yoshihisa Taira at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, where he received the diplôme supérieur, and studied ethnomusicology with François Picard at the Université Paris Sorbonne-Paris IV from 2003–05, where he earned his DEA.

He taught composition and harmony at the Alexander Spendiaryan School of Music in Yerevan in 1995–96 and coordinated the Department of International Relations at the Komitas State Conservatory from 1997–2001. He founded the Euterpe School of Music Creation in Toronto in 2007 and has served as its director since 2007.

He has lived in Canada since 2005.
