THE LIVING COMPOSERS PROJECT  

Aram Hovhannisyan

(b. 1984, Yerevan).

Armenian composer of mostly chamber works that have been performed in Europe and North America; he is also active as a flutist.

Mr. Hovhannisyan initially studied at the Anushavan Ter-Hevondyan School of Music in Yerevan and graduated in 1999. He studied composition with Levon Chaushyan and flute with Yevgeny Noninyan at the Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan from 1999–2003 and studied composition with Nicolas Bolens and Éric Gaudibert and electronic music with Rainer Boesch and Émile Ellberger at the Conservatoire de musique de Genève in 2003–04, where he later studied composition with Michael Jarrell and electronic music with Rainer Boesch.

Among his honours are First Prize in the competition Amadeus in Yerevan (1998, for Chamber Symphony), First Prize in the competition Aram Khachaturian in Yerevan (2003, for Je voudrais me souvenir...), co-First Prize in the competition Benjamin Britten in Yerevan (2003, for Between Dream and Reality), and First Prize in the competition for young composers pre-art in Zürich (2005, for IRÆ [Cahier de tristesse No. 2]). His music has been performed in Armenia, Austria, Georgia, Hungary, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the USA.

As a flutist, he has mostly performed contemporary music.

He is also active in other positions. He co-founded with Artur Avanesov the ensemble for contemporary music AUS in Yerevan in 2002 and has served as its co-artistic director with him since 2002.

He taught composition and flute at the Anushavan Ter-Hevondyan School of Music from 2001–03.
