T he Living Composers Project  

Jazylbekova, Jamilia (b. March 22, 1971, Kaskelen). Kazak composer, now resident in Germany, of mostly chamber works that have been performed in Central Asia, Europe and North America.

Ms. Jazylbekova studied piano and transverse flute at the State Music School in Almaty from 1980-89. She studied composition with Nikolay Sydelnikov and Vladimir Tarnopolski at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow from 1990-95 and analysis with Günter Steinke, composition with Younghi Pagh-Paan and voice with Maria Kowollik at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen from 1995-2002, on a scholarship from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. She has also attended Darmstadt (1996), a vocal course in Lichtenberg (1996), a masterclass with Klaus Huber (1997), the Kompositionsseminar in Boswil (2001), and Royaumont (2001).

She has received numerous honors, including Second Prize (no First Prize was awarded) in a chamber music competition in Almaty (1987, for Quartett) and an honorable mention in the Jiger competition in Almaty (1988, for TolgauReflection). Her Uschar was selected for performance at the Nachwuchsforum der Gesellschaft für Neue Musik (1997). She has received an honorable mention in the Gaudeamus Music Week (1998, for Uschar), the Franz-Liszt-Kompositionspreis from the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar (2000) and the Kompositionsstipendium of the Berliner Senat (2000). Most recently, she received Second Prize (no First Prize was awarded) in the Internationaler Wettbewerb der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Flöte in Frankfurt (2001, for NYR).

She has served residencies at the Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf (2000), the Künstlerinnenhof die HÖGE near Bremen (2000), the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles (2002), the Künstlerhaus Lukas in Ahrenshoop (2002), and the Künstlerhaus Schreyahn in Niedersachsen (2003).
