THE LIVING COMPOSERS PROJECT  

Artyom Kim

(b. 10 August 1976, Bekabad).

Uzbek composer of mostly stage, chamber and vocal works that have been performed in Asia and Europe; he is also active as a conductor.

Mr. Kim began private studies in music at age ten and studied bayan with Mikhail V. Mayevsky at the Khamza State Music College in Tashkent from 1991–95. He studied composition with Mirsadik Tadjiev at the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan in Tashkent in 1995–96 and with Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky there from 1996–2001, where he earned his MMus.

Among his honours is First Prize as a bayan-player in a competition for young performers in Samarkand (1994). His music has been performed in France, the Netherlands, Russia, the UK, and Uzbekistan.

As a conductor, he has served as music director of the Ilkhom Theatre in Tashkent since 1999. He has conducted his own music alongside contemporary répertoire, often in collaboration with the Atlas Ensemble and Nieuw Ensemble, both in Amsterdam.

He is also active in other positions. He helped to organise the annual festival for contemporary music Ilkhom-XX in Tashkent from 1997–2006.
