Longo, Paolo (b. 1967, Trieste). Italian composer of chamber, choral, vocal, and piano works that have been performed in Europe and elsewhere; he is also active as a conductor.

Mr. Longo studied composition with Stefano Procaccioli and piano with Massimo Gon at the Conservatorio G. Tartini in Trieste, where he graduated with highest honors in 1990. He also studied conducting with Gianfranco Masini in Reggio Emilia.

His honors include First Prize in the Edvard Grieg memorial competition in Oslo (2003, for Monologo Secondo, 'Sphynxs-Vari[A]zioni'), Second Prize in the Egidio Carella competition in Piacenza (2003, for Histoires de cendre), First Prize in the chamber music competition of the Asociación para la Difusión de la Nueva Música (ADNM) in Tarragona (2004, for D'autres discordances), and Second Prize in the Città di Barletta competition (2004, for Jeux et Berceuses). He has also earned a special mention in the Premio Valentino Bucchi in Rome (2004, for Monologo Primo, '...d'une sphère sans lumière...') and two awards in the Renée B. Fisher Composer Awards in New Haven (honorable mention, 2004, for Monologo Secondo, 'Sphynxs-Vari[A]zioni'; First Prize, 2005, for Jeux et Berceuses) and was selected to participate in the Microscores project of Ensemble 175 East in New Zealand (2004). In addition, he received a special mention in the Prix Reine Marie José in Geneva (2004, for ...Astrali nidi..., 'Quasi un madrigale'), First Prize in the Ivan Spassov competition in Plovdiv, Bulgaria (2004, for Histoires de cendre), First Prize in the Tokyo chamber music competition (2005, for Albertson-Variations), Second Prize in the Angoulême 2005 competition (2005, for Albertson-Variations), Second Prize in the Salvatore Martirano Memorial Composition Award from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2005, for Albertson-Variations), and Third Prize in the Premio Vittoria Caffa Righetti competition in Cuneo (2005, for ROUGE CLAIR-OBSCUR '...sans mémoire sans cœur sans sève...'). Most recently, he earned First Prize in the Onde Musicali competition in Taranto (2006, for Oblò 2, 'ricor[di]scordanze') and Premier Prix in the competition of the Académie Internationale de Lutèce in Paris (2006, for Albertson-Variations). His music has been performed in Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Israel, Italy, Latvia, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, and the USA.

He is also active in other positions. As a conductor, he has led performances with ensembles and orchestras in Croatia, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia, and Uzbekistan. He co-founded with Stefano Procaccioli the Taukay Ensemble in Italy in 1996, with which he has given numerous premières, and has since served as its music director and principal conductor. He also served as artistic supervisor of the Teatro Raffaello Sanzio in Urbino in 1997–98.

Symétrie publishes most of his works, but some scores are available from Bèrben and La Mà di Guido.
