T he Living Composers Project  

Luzko, Daniel (b. 1966, Encarnación). Paraguayan composer, now resident in both Paraguay and the USA, of mostly orchestral and chamber works that have been performed in the Americas and Europe; he is also active as a conductor and pianist.

Mr. Luzko studied privately with José Luis Miranda and Luis Szarán in Paraguay from 1985-89 and then studied with Edward Mattila and Jack Winerock at the University of Kansas, where he earned his MA in composition in 1995. He had post-graduate studies in composition and piano with Marian Borkowski at the Frédéric Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw from 1992-94 and then studied composition with Helmut Braunlich at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC from 1995-97 and there earned his DMA. He has attended composition seminars with Louis Andriessen, Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Henri Dutilleux, and Krzysztof Penderecki, a conducting seminar with Kurt Masur and the Orquesta Sinfónica de São Paulo and a piano seminar with Claude Frank.

Among his honors are First Prize in the Villa de Madrid Competition (1998, for Piano Concerto) and the Premio Nacional de Música from the senate of Paraguay (1999, for Trayecto). In addition, his music represented Paraguay at the Encompor seminar in Porto Alegre (Brazil, 2000). His music has been performed throughout the Americas and in Europe. The Irvine Valley College Tour Choir performed his choral piece Land of Promise on a tour in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay in 2000.

While in the USA, he served as an intern at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 1998. As a pianist, he received First Prize in the Alpha Iota International Music Competition in the USA in 1991 and has performed as a soloist in Paraguay and has also given a recital in Vienna. As a conductor, he has conducted the Orquesta Sinfónica de Asunción and currently works with UNESCO on projects to create youth orchestras throughout Paraguay.

He has taught at various universities in the USA, including the Catholic University of America, the Falls Church Conservatory and the University of Kansas. He has also taught in Paraguay, notably at the Conservatório Josefina de Gehre, and has lectured at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna, the Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro and the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica and on the Radio Nacional de España.
