T he Living Composers Project  

Marcel, Luc (b. 1962, Charlemagne, Québec). Canadian composer of mostly orchestral and chamber works that have been performed throughout the Americas and in Europe.

Mr. Marcel studied composition with Serge Garant and Michel Longtin at the Université de Montréal from 1984-92, where he graduated with his maîtrise.

Many leading ensembles, including Arraymusic, the Chromos Saxophone Quartet, Die Reihe Ensemble, l'Ensemble Solange, the SMCQ Ensemble, and the Xenakis Ensemble, among others, have played his works, as well as the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

The American Festival of Microtonal Music, Arraymusic, pianists Jacques Drouin and Louis-Philippe Pelletier, the Festival International de Saxophones de Montréal, the ensemble Jeu Présent, Montréal Danse, the Quatuor Bozzini, the Quatuor Quasar, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and the Xenakis Ensemble have commissioned works from him.

He has earned prizes in the SOCAN (1986, for Troie), the CBC Young Composers (1986, for Détention) and the Arraymusic (1995, for On the Spot) competitions and in 1999, his Pastel earned First Prize in the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra New Music Festival Competition. He has earned grants from the Canada Council and the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec.
