Dr. Matthews wrote his first composition at age sixteen. As a scholar, he and his brother Colin Matthews collaborated with Deryck Cooke and Berthold Goldschmidt on the revised performing version of the Symphonie Nr. 10 by Gustav Mahler from 1964–74. As a writer, he has contributed reviews to various journals and has written the books Michael Tippett: An Introductory Study (1980) and Britten (2003, Haus Publishing), as well as a published lecture, Landscape into Sound (1991, Claridge Press), on the relation of music to painting. He also contributed the foreword to The Selected Letters of Michael Tippett (2005, edited by Thomas Schuttenhelm, Faber and Faber).
