T he Living Composers Project  

Medyulyanova, Polina (b. April 4, 1974, Tashkent). Uzbek composer of mostly chamber, choral and vocal works that have been performed in Asia and Europe; she is also active as a performer.

Ms. Medyulyanova is the daughter of the conductor Viktor Medyulyanov (b. 1946) and the pianist Natalya Gienko (b. 1944) and granddaughter of the composer Boris Gienko (b. 1917 – d. 2000) and the pianist Tatyana Gienko (b. 1919 – d. 2000). She had music lessons with her grandfather at age four and wrote her first composition at age eight. She then studied composition with Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky at the Uspensky Academic Lyceum in Tashkent, where she graduated in 1992. She later graduated from the Mukhtar Ashrafi Conservatory of Music in Tashkent in 1997 and finished her studies in composition with Felix Yanov-Yanovsky at the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan in Tashkent in 1999. She has studied composition with Wim Henderickx and Fabio Nieder, conducting with Sam ten Velden and organ with Jacques van Oortmerssen at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam since 2005.

Among her honors are Second Prize in the Gaudeamus competition (2003, for Ave Maris Stella), an honor in the Christmas competition of the Fondazione Donne in Musica in Rome (2006, for Three Christmas Carols) and Second Prize in the Fanny Mendelssohn competition in Unna (2006, for Refractions). Her music has been performed in France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, and Uzbekistan, including twice at the Gaudeamus Muziekweek (2003–04) and the East Meets West festival in Turin (2003–04).

As a performer, she has played chang (Uzbek string instrument), organ and piano in Germany and Uzbekistan and has been an active participant in the Festival of Modern Music in Tashkent since 1998 and the Ilkhom-XX festival in Tashkent since 1999.

She taught composition at the Khamza College of Music in Tashkent from 1997–2002 and has taught composition at the Uspensky Academic Lyceum since 2002.

Most of her works are held in a fund owned by the Uzbekistan State TV Company in Tashkent.
