T he Living Composers Project  

Nieder, Fabio (b. 1957, Trieste). Italian-born German-based composer of stage, orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal, and piano works that have received performances throughout Europe.

Mr. Nieder studied piano with Roberto Repini and composition with Giulio Viozzi at the Conservatorio di Trieste and then studied with Witold Lutoslawski in 1977, on a scholarship from Jeunesses Musicales in Groznjan (Croatia).

He has received many major awards, including the Premio V. Bucchi (1979), the ISCM Prize (Austria, 1980) and three prizes from the Gaudeamus Music Week (1980, 1982, 1984). More recently, he has received First Prize in the 2 Agosto (Bologna, 1995), Second Prize (no First Prize was awarded) in the E. Porrino (1995), Third Prize in the Compania (Münster, 1996), and prizes in the Klagenfurt (Austria, 1998) and D. Guaccero (Bari, 1998) international competitions.

His music has been performed at many major festivals and institutions, including Milano Poesia, Musica nel Nostro Tempo and the Teatro alla Scala (Milan), the Nuova Consonanza and Nuovi Spazi Musicali (directed by Ada Gentile) festivals (Rome), Antidogma Musica (Turin), and the Biennale and the Teatro la Fenice (Venice). In addition, his works have been heard on WDR (Cologne) and at the Holland Festival (Amsterdam), Steirischer Herbst (Graz), Musica Incognita (Linz), Aspekte and Mobile Contemporale (Salzburg), Expan 91 (Spittal/Drau), and the Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik.

Lastly, the Tipasa Biennale (Algeria), the Gaudeamus Music Week (Amsterdam), the State University of New York (Buffalo), the Juilliard School (New York), the Journées de musique contemporaine and the Présences festival (Paris), Musica Nova (Reykjavík), Musik im 21. Jahrhundert (Saarbrücken), the Pan Music Festival (Seoul), Musik der Jahrhunderte (Stuttgart), the Italiaans Project (Utrecht), Wien Modern, and the Días de Música Contemporanea (Vigo) have all presented his works.

He is also active as a pianist and was an accompanist to Petre Munteanu and Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf from 1978-81. He has also organized various ensembles in Germany and Italy.

He now teaches musical analysis at the Università di Trieste and has lectured there and at the Associazione Continuum Temporale, the International Advanced Courses of Music and elsewhere.
