Nuteanu, Diana
(b. December 1, 1967, Bucharest). Romanian composer of mostly chamber and
choral works that have been heard in Europe and the USA; she is also active as
a pianist.
Ms. Nuteanu studied piano with
Daniela Ioan and Gabriela Enasescu at the George Enescu High School from
1978-86. She then studied composition with Dan Constantinescu at the National
University of Music in Bucharest from 1986-90 and had post-graduate studies at
the Academy of Music in Bucharest in 1990-91. She attended composition courses
in Poland in 1991 and Darmstadt in 1992 and studied with Franco Donatoni at the
Accademia Chigiana in 1993. In 2001, she earned her PhD in musicology at the
National University of Music in Bucharest.
Among her competition honors are a
mention in Targu Mures (1988), Third Prize in Cluj-Napoca (1989, for Quintet) and First Prize in Iasi (1989,
for Three Miniatures). She has earned
five honors in Bucharest (First Prize, 1993, for Song; First Prize, 1994, for Children’s Orchestra; mention, 1995, for The Shadow of the Night; Third Prize,
1997, for Elegia; and mention, 1997,
for Scherzo).
From 1990-94, she was active as a
conductor with the Bulgarian Cultural Association. As a pianist, she has played
with the chorus Eutherpe from the Elena Cuza High School in Bucharest since
1990 and with the chorus Fortis (which she co-founded) since 1994. From
1993-96, she was a pianist with the chorus Gloria Cantus.
From 1990-95, she was a professor of
music at the Elena Cuza High School and since 1995, has taught at the National
University of Music in Bucharest, where she has been an associate professor
since 1997.
