Richardson, Abigail (b. 1976, Oxford). British-born Canadian composer of mostly chamber works that have been performed in North America.
Ms. Richardson studied composition with Allan Gordon Bell at the University of Calgary from 1994–98, where she earned her BMus in composition with distinction. She then studied composition with Chan Ka Nin and Gary Kulesha at the University of Toronto from 1998–2004, where she earned her MMus and DMus in composition.
Among her honors are the first Karen Kieser Prize in Canadian Music (2003), the co-selected work in the Under-30 category at the International Rostrum of Composers (2004) and First Prize in the Emerging Composer competition of the Canadian Music Centre Prairie Region (2005, all for dissolve). She has received commissions from clarinettist James Campbell, the trio Meduse, Radio France, the Southern Ontario Chamber Music Institute, the Talisker Players, Tapestry New Opera, the Toronto Masque Theatre, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Her music has been performed in Argentina, Canada, France, and the USA and has been broadcast throughout the world.
She is also active in other positions. She has worked on educational outreach projects for Tapestry New Opera since 2004 and has served as an affiliate composer with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since 2006. In addition, she served as composer-in-residence at the Southern Ontario Chamber Music Institute in 2005 and the International Conductors Guild Conference in Toronto in 2007.
She has lived in Canada since 1982.
