Sammoutis, Evis (b. 1979, Nicosia). Cypriot composer of mostly chamber and vocal works that have been performed in Europe and elsewhere; he is also active as a guitarist.
Mr. Sammoutis studied music with Nabil Ghrewati at the European Conservatory in Nicosia from 1989-97 and there earned his LRSM and performance and teaching diploma with distinction. He studied composition with Alastair Borthwick and Thoma Simaku and guitar with Gilbert Biberian at the University of Hull from 1998-2001, where he earned his BMus, on the Sir Roy Marshall Scholarship. He has studied composition with Thoma Simaku at the University of York since 2001, on the ORS Scholarship and a scholarship from the PRS Foundation. He has also attended various seminars with Georges Aperghis, George Benjamin, Brian Ferneyhough, Michael Gandolfi, Osvaldo Golijov, Fausto Romitelli, Johannes Schöllhorn, Augusta Read Thomas, James Wood, and Robert Zuidam.
Among his academic honors are the Thomas Beecham Trust Award (1999-2001), the Hull University Departmental Prize (2001), the Nonhebel Award (2001-04), and the Vinson Award (2003-04). His other honors include Second Prize in the Y.A. Papaioannou competition of the Greek Composers Union (2003, for Proteus). His music has been performed in Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, France, Greece, Japan, Kosova, Ukraine, the UK, and the USA.
As a guitarist, he worked with the Guitar Orchestra of the European Conservatory from 1989-97 and has since appeared regularly as a soloist, most often in performances of modern music.
He taught guitar at La Ronda School of Music in Nicosia from 1995-97 and the European Conservatory in 1996-97 and has taught guitar at both the University of Hull and the University of York since 2001. He also lectured on guitar in Malaysia in 2002.
