T he Living Composers Project  

Torres Maldonado, Javier (b. 1968, Chetumal). Mexican composer, now resident in Italy, of mostly orchestral, chamber and vocal works that have been performed in the Americas and Europe.

Mr. Torres initially studied composition at the Conservatorio Nacional de México and continued his studies at the Accademia Lorenzo Perosi and Accademia Chigiana with Franco Donatoni from 1996-98. He then studied with Sandro Gorli and Alessandro Solbiati at the Conservatorio G. Verdi in Milan from 1996-99, with Azio Corghi at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome in 1998-99 and with Ivan Fedele at the Conservatoire National de Région de Strasbourg from 2001-03. He also participated in composition courses and masterclasses with George Benjamin, György Ligeti and other composers from 1996-98 and studied electronic music at the Conservatorio G. Verdi from 2000-03.

Among his many honors are First prizes in the Città di Barletta (Italy, 1997, for Ximohua), Ad Referendum II (Montréal, 1998, for Figuralmusik II), Reine Maria José (Geneva, 2000, for Luz), and Alfredo Casella (2001-02, for Como el Viento) competitions. He has also earned two Second prizes in the Salzburg Mozarteum Competition (1997-99, for Orior; 2001-03, for Tres Estudios para Violín) and was honored with the Mozart Medal from the governments of Austria and Mexico (2000).

He has received many commissions, mainly in Italy and Mexico, but also from prestigious ensembles, festivals, institutions, and soloists in Austria and New Zealand. In 2000 and 2002, the Ensemble Niccolò Castiglioni gave portrait concerts of his works at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl and in 2002, the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players performed his Figuralmusik II.

Since 2000, he has been artistic director of the Dynamis Ensemble, which specializes in new music.

Edizioni Suvini Zerboni and Universal Edition publish his music.
