Tsepkolenko, Karmella (b. February 20, 1955, Odessa). Ukrainian composer of stage, orchestral, chamber, vocal, piano, organ, and multimedia works that have been performed throughout Europe and in the USA.
Prof. Tsepkolenko studied composition with Aleksandr Kogan and piano with Grigory Buchynsky and Yelena Pannikova at the Pyotr Stoliarsky Special Music School in Odessa from 1962-73. She then studied composition with Aleksandr Krasotov and piano with Lyudmyla Ginzburg at the Odessa State A.V. Nezhdanova Music Academy from 1973-79 and later with Gennady Tsypin at the Moscow Pedagogic University, where she earned her PhD in music pedagogy in 1990. In addition, she attended Darmstadt in 1992 and 1994 and Bayreuth in 1993.
Among her many honors are Third Prize in the USSR All-Union Student Spring Festival in Yerevan (1978), Second Prize in the USSR All-Union Composers Competition in Moscow (1978) and an honorable mention in the Carl-Maria-von-Weber Competition in Dresden (1983, for Glorification of the Four Elements). In addition, she has twice received the Prize of the Rendezvous International du Piano en Creuse in France (1990, for Tonocolori from the book Artistic Games; 1993), as well as the Boris Lyatoshynsky National Prize (2001) and a mention in the Tvoi Imena Odessa Competition (2002).
She has also received numerous fellowships, including ones from the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung (1995), the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (1996), the Brahms-Haus-Stiftung (1996), the International Renaissance Foundation (Ukraine, 1996), and the National Endowment for the Arts (1996), as well as grants from KulturKontakt (Austria) and Pro Helvetia (Switzerland). She has served residencies in Germany at the Künstlerhof Schreyahn (1998), the Worpswede Künstlerhäuser (2000) and the Künstlerinnenhof die HÖGE near Bremen (2002-03).
Her music has been heard throughout Europe and in Japan and the USA at numerous prestigious festivals, including the Wien Modern (1997), the ISCM World Music Days (1999, Bucharest; 2001, Yokohama) and the Summer Garden in New York (2000).
Prof. Tsepkolenko is also active in other positions. In 1995, she founded the festival Two Days and Two Nights of New Music in Odessa and has since served as its artistic director. She has served as president of the Association New Music in Odessa, the Ukrainian section of ISCM, and as one of its delegates to ISCM since 1997. She has also organized numerous festivals of new music, often with multimedia aspects.
With Aleksandr Perepelytsya, she wrote the book Artistic Games (1990). She has also written numerous articles, including many about her teaching methods.
She has been Professor of Composition at the Odessa State A.V. Nezhdanova Music Academy since 1980 and has led an annual workshop for pianists in Biel since 2001.
