T he Living Composers Project  

Tüür, Erkki-Sven (b. October 16, 1959, Kärdla, Hiiumaa). Esteemed Estonian composer of mostly orchestral, chamber and choral works that have been performed throughout the world.

Mr. Tüür studied flute and percussion at the Tallinn Music School from 1976-80 and composition with Jaan Rääts at the Estonian Academy of Music in Tallinn from 1980-84. He also had private studies in composition with Lepo Sumera in Tallinn from 1980-84.

His honors include the Cultural Prize of the Republic of Estonia (1991, 1996). The Cabaza Percussion Quartet, the California EAR Unit, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Estonian State Symphony Orchestra, the Fundação Gulbenkian, the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Hilliard Ensemble, the Koninklijk Filharmonisch Orkest van Vlaanderen, Oper Dortmund, the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, and the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet, among other ensembles, orchestras and organizations, have commissioned works from him.

He was initially active as a rock musician and was a member of the band In Spe, which he founded, from 1979-84.
