Tzanou, Athanasia (b. June 25, 1971, Athens). Greek composer of mostly chamber works that have been performed throughout Europe and elsewhere.
Ms. Tzanou received formal musical training at the National Conservatory of Greece in Athens. She continued her studies with Sylvano Bussotti in Florence in 1992 and then studied composition with Franco Donatoni at the Conservatorio G. Verdi in Milan from 1993-98, where she graduated with high honors. She has also attended several masterclasses, including ones with Brian Ferneyhough (Szombathely, 1997; Royaumont, 1999), Karlheinz Stockhausen (Kürten, 1998) and Toshio Hosokawa and Johannes Schöllhorn (Royaumont, 1999). In addition, she participated in the annual Cursus de Composition et Informatique Musicale at IRCAM in 1999-2000.
Her honors include the Wiener Städtischer Versicherung (1998, to study composition with Boguslaw Schaeffer and electronic music with Marek Choloniewski), First Prize in the guitar competition in Göttingen (2000, for Epígramma II) and an honorable mention in the chamber music competition in Forli (2000). She has also received the Mozart Preis from the Salzburg Mozarteum (2001), the Johannes-Brahms-Preis in Hamburg (2001), First Prize in a national competition in Athens (2001), and the Andrzej Panufnik Prize for the best piece by a composer under 30 in Kraków (2001). She was also a finalist in the Alea III competition in Boston (2001). Her works have been performed in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, the UK, and the USA and portrait concerts have been given at the Begegnungen festival in Innsbruck (2000) and the Biennale München (2004).
Several of her scores are archived at the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel.
