Zagny, Sergei (b. 1960, Moscow). Russian composer of interdisciplinary works that have been performed in Europe and elsewhere; he is also active as a performer.

Mr. Zagny studied composition with Albert Leman and music theory with Vsevolod Zaderatsky at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow from 1983-88 and there had post-graduate studies in composition with Albert Leman from 1988-91.

Among his honors is the John Cage First Russian Prize in Moscow (1992). His music has been performed throughout Russia and in Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA.

As a performer, he is active as an improviser on non-traditional instruments, as well as an organist, performance artist and pianist, primarily in performances of his own music.

Mr. Zagny is also active in other positions. He conducted the Small Garden Orchestra of the School of Individual Directing in Moscow from 1992-96 and worked at the Theremin Center of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory from 1993-95. In addition, he has written several articles for Russian publications, one of which was also published in Perspectives of New Music (1999).

He has taught analysis, harmony and polyphony at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory since 1992.

In addition to the works listed below, Mr. Zagny has written much incidental music for films and stage productions.
